The Correspondence Courses Program provides an opportunity to enroll in and complete courses from Seattle Central Community College from the home or work. Such courses enable individuals to earn credits towards an A.A. or A.A.S. degree.
ESL (Reading and Language Arts). In this course students learn methods of assessment, placement and instruction of ESL students in reading and language arts. Here you will discover instructional techniques which focus on both the literacy level and age of the ESL student.The emphasize of the course will be on the integration of reading and language arts.
Integrating ESL in the Mainstream Classroom – is specifically designed for the teacher who has bilingual and monolingual students in the same classroom. The course makes an overview of current theories of language acquisition, still its main focus is on practical instructional strategies. Participants will be given a wide repertoire of strategies drawn from bilingual, ESL and mainstream methodologies. The course is structured so that participants have an opportunity to experience each instructional strategy.
Composition – gives the introduction to the writing process. Course assignments focus on major strategies of nonfiction prose, with subject matter drawn from firsthand experience and observation. Course prerequisite: satisfactory performance on English Placement Test.
American Literature. Writers of the 20th century with emphasis on major modern fiction, drama, poetry and trends in current literature are discovered in terms of this course. Practice of critical techniques.
Introduction to Fiction – study and analysis of the art, elements, and techniques of short stories, novellas, and novels of American and international authors.
Introduction to Linguistics – looks at language as fundamental to human beings and human culture. The course examines the complexity of language through phonological, grammatical and discourse analyses. It also explores the diversity of language use through its socio/psychological dimensions.
The correspondence courses are open enrollment. School year consists of two quarters (180 days), during which students are supposed to complete course requirements. Financial Aid may not be used for Continuous correspondence courses and full-time tuition fees are not applicable. Loan deferment eligibility is not available for these courses.
