Ohio University offers Independent and Distance Learning Programs for those who seek obtaining degree in History, among them:

Western Civilization in Modern Times. This course covers the period from Renaissance to 1648. It studies Renaissance, Reformation, origins of national state system, diplomacy and imperialism as applied to Portugal, Spain, and Hapsburg Empire, and commercial and scientific revolutions. Prerequisite: freshmen or sophomores only. The course consists of 8 lessons and 2 exams. IS/CCE

Western Civilization in Modern Times (continuation). The period studious period from 1648 to 1848; it analyses absolutism, constitutionalism, operation of coalition diplomacy, and imperialism as applied to France and Britain; Westernization of eastern Europe, Enlightenment, French Revolution; agricultural, commercial, and industrial revolutions; and growth of ideologies – liberalism, socialism, and nationalism. Prerequisite: freshmen or sophomores only. The course consists of 8 lessons and 2 exams. IS/CCE

Western Civilization in Modern Times (continuation). The course covers 1848 to present: continued industrial revolution and spread of liberalism, socialism, and nationalism; rise and fall of German bid for power in two world wars; new ideologies of materialism, positivism, Social Darwinism, irrationalism, totalitarianism; Russian and Chinese revolutions and international communism; rise and fall of Western empires in Africa and Asia. Prerequisite: freshmen or sophomores only. The course consists of 8 lessons and 2 exams. IS/CCE

The Rise of Modern Asia. This course introduces students to the history of a vast region that has experienced considerable changes during the past 150 years. Ten units will compare the national experiences of China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Philippines through stages of transition from colonialism to independence movements, from agrarian to industrial economies, and from authoritarian dynastic states toward democratic nation-states. The course consists of 10 lessons and 2 exams. IS

Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Here you can discover Prehistoric eras, origins of Mediterranean civilizations, problems of ancient chronology; civilizations of Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Biblical Hebrews, and Persians. The course stresses archaeological and literary sources, comparative social and religious concepts, acculturation, contributions to Western civilization. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. The course consists of 2 exams. CCE

Ancient Greece. This course will familiarize you with Aegean prehistory, Athenian society and culture, Mycenaean Greeks, Dorian invasions, Greek Renaissance, Minoan civilization, growth of the polis, Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, political history of Greece to Alexander. The main emphasize of this course is on archaeological sources, mythology and drama, Hellenic contributions to Western civilization. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. The course consists of 2 exams. CCE

Ancient Rome – acquaints students with the early peoples of Italy, growth of empire, Etruscans, constitutional development of Republic, civil wars, history of principate to Constantine. This course examines archaeological sources, Roman life and institutions, Latin literature, Roman contributions to Western civilization. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. The course consists of 2 exams. CCE

World War I. This course explores the origins of the war, both diplomatic and strategic, as well as the peace-making afterward, but the central focus will be the war itself: the major offensives, Allied and German strategies and tactics, trench warfare of the Western Front, chemical warfare, the war in the air and on the seas, the home front, the use of the machine gun and the tank. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. The course consists of 8 lessons and 2 exams. IS
